- Make a trip to the library. Get a library card and a favorite book.
- Call the school and ask for a schedule for School Council meetings for the year.
- Ask about the best part of your child’s school day. Did any of their classmates do anything funny?
- Meet another parent in your child’s class.
- Set a date with the teacher to visit your child’s classroom.
- Ask your child to show – or tell you about – something they learned in school that week.
- Take a walk and take turns pointing out interesting sights.
- Check out the Sunday paper with your child—especially the comics or an interesting article.
- Ask your child who she ate lunch with. Talk about friends.
- Ask your child’s teacher if the class could use your old magazines, newspapers, or other things.
- Think about the next holiday. Talk its history.
- Call Mass PIRC (1-800-471-0980) and see if there’s a workshop that can help you learn about your child’s education.
- Ask family members about what a highlight of the week was for them.
- Have fun – go to a football game, performance, or watch a favorite TV show. Talk about it afterwards.
- Check out the Sunday paper again. What’s happening in the favorite comic or discuss an interesting issue.
- Check over your child’s homework. Ask if any supplies are needed.
- Ask your child if any subjects are too hard or too easy.
- Send a note thanking the teacher for any new learning you notice in your child.
- Check into tutoring or other learning support if you child needs it.
- Ask the teacher if there is anything you can do to help your child learn.
- Have fun. Relax. Help your child cook a favorite item.
- Children can learn having fun. Use games like memory, toys, software. Play together with them.
- Ask what your child learned today that surprised him.
- Make a special effort to go over homework and find something to praise. Effort is always a good thing to praise!
- Involve your child in making a dessert.
- Ask if your child can show you something he learned or did today.
- Go to a movie together.
- Talk with your child about educational TV programs.
- Learn with your child about art. Take a trip to an art gallery.
- Help your child organize homework and school papers for the week.
- Ask you child to tell you about what she read in class today.
EVERY school day, ask about homework.
